They say it takes a village to raise a child – but William isn’t a child anymore.
He’s a 21 year old man with Down Syndrome. Out of school, out of youth care activities, and on a waiting list for adult programs. So Will is at home and he can’t be left alone – and that makes things challenging for his parents who both work full time. The older siblings are out on their own and help when they can – but it isn’t enough.
Any parent who has a child with exceptional needs knows that it can be crippling without additional support. But it isn’t easy to ask for help. Many parents assume it’s their problem and theirs alone. The reality is that family and friends are more than willing to do what they can to help – big or small.
